3 Ways to Keep Seniors Safe in the Summer Heat

Harmony In-Home Healthcare Inc. • Aug 07, 2021

During the summer months, temperatures in Missouri can reach as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. While such severe heat isn't comfortable for anyone, it can be especially problematic for seniors. Elderly care providers can attest that seniors, whose health is often compromised, are vulnerable to dehydration and overheating. If you're caring for an aging loved one, here are a few tips for ensuring they thrive all summer long.

How to Protect Seniors From Summer Heat

1. Give Them Lots of Fluids

The hotter it is, the more you sweat, and the more you sweat, the closer you get to dehydration. Senior caregivers must be especially cognizant of fluid intake because older adults have less water in their bodies, so they're closer to dehydration from the start. Ensure your loved one drinks at least 64 ounces of water a day. If they find fruit juice or sports drinks more palatable, you can dilute them with water.

2. Keep Them Inside When the Temperature Spikes

The temperature spikes between noon and 3:00 PM, so it's best to plan your loved one's outings around that window. Still, keep in mind that it can be hot in the morning and evening, so try to avoid strenuous outdoor activities on record-setting days. Monitor your loved one closely during and after outings on moderate days. If they look red and flushed, experience shortness of breath, or feel lightheaded, call 911 right away. If they're overheating, they'll need medical care.

3. Ensure They've Dressed for the Weather

Before taking your loved one outside in the summer, double-check that they've chosen appropriate attire. Lightweight, breathable fabrics in pale colors will help them stay cool because they won't trap heat. Ensure they don a hat with a wide brim and thick, wraparound sunglasses to keep the sun off their face. Finally, slather on some sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect their skin from sun damage.
